I wanted to get this rant out somewhere and I dont have any art friends who would care either, so here it shall go! :D

You see all these tutorials on how to render different surfaces and how to draw different things, but in all seriousness all you need to learn is how light works, anatomy, ect. And that's complicated enough! At the end of the day beginners have not yet put in the hours of study and application and I fear tutorials like that aren't teaching you fundamentals, they aren't teaching science...it's a short cut that you will rely on time and time again without being able to expand. Because you only learned how to do something with a very linear perspective D: So in my opinion those tutorials are great for making extra dosh, but I feel I would be kidding myself.

mmm maybe for beginners, but acquiring this information is a good start :). I'm actually gonna get one on metal rendering since i am not so skilled at it, it will give me some ideas for texturing and such; i don't see them as a bad thing; but you are correct in thinking beginners will use them as a shortcut, but a beginner has a lot of mistakes to make anyways so it won't really hurt :)
